CHILD ABUSE A THAI PROBLEM

by Kim Gooi, ECHO SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

National Echo, Saturday, December 29, 1984. First published in Bangkok World 1983

[Author’s note: Aug 1980 British H-Rights campaigner Tim Bond claimed he bought 2 slave boys for 700 Baht.  1981 German magazine Stern claimed thousands of slave children sold to Bangkok factories and households with dubious pictures. 1982 John Pilger presented the most sensational and controversial story. Writing for the Daily Mirror on the eve of Thai PM’s visit to London, he proclaimed he bought a slave girl in Bangkok for 85 pound sterling. Some Bangkok ‘Old Hands’  were up in arms to straighten the issue.]
